My Dear Friends,
These first weeks since I’ve announced that I’m
running for First Selectman have been very gratifying.
I’ve
received so much encouragement and energy through your
kind words, calls, emails, touches and
offers of help. For
the past
28 years, I’ve been actively working
with you towards a common goal: to keep Windham
the safe and affordable community we call home.
I’ve
worked with Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians,
moms, small business people, students and
retirees of all of our varied ethnic backgrounds
on many campaigns
over the past 28 years. We
protected our air from mercury-laden incineration;
protected
our water from an ash landfill; protected
our downtown from unscrupulous
developers. It’s hard
work to fight City Hall, but we fought together.
More gratifying has been working with you in positive
ways that help our community get to know each
other
and become economically secure. The 3rd Thursday
Street Fests are a perfect model of both a
local economic initiative and community building.
The Land Trust provides a good model for permanent
housing affordability. And the time is right now
to incorporate
the latest in energy-saving, communication and quality
of life technologies to grow our sustainable local
economy from the bottom up.
After working with you all these years, I know what
we need to do so that Windham can fulfill its potential.
I will clean up existing problems and then lead the
way to a grassroots economic revitalization
that
includes all members of our community. Real progress
means investing in our communities and
strengthening our local economy as if people mattered.
I’m delighted to be running with The Bottom
Line. Every time we meet, the excitement fills the
air.
We like each other, enjoy
sharing our ideas, and are eager to work together,
across party lines. We
will work together to
make Windham better—the best
we can be.
Vote as if your future depends on it, because it
does. Act now.
Sincerely,
Jean de Smet
